In the introduction of this section I was talking about how hard it is to develop in this area of the game. Some of the ways people function psychologically in poker is determined upon deep-rooted things that are assimilated with special circumstances unique to every person.
I’m sure this is not news for you. And I hope you can see ways to get through difficulties in the way of acting disciplined and hold on to a plan in your poker game. We have talk of methods to avoid tilting, the utility in behaving after a plan and that a goal can be helpful in accomplish continuity.
But there are still problems ahead. One question remains: after you getting more knowledge about the psychological aspects and the methods to adjust to them, will you be able to practise it?
Awareness of affecting sources
To practise a good discipline you must seek out the right conditions. Your reasons to play will affect your result. Are you playing because you need recreation or because you are motivated for the game it self? I don’t want to forbid you playing for your own entertainment or any other reason, but here I’m turning to the ambitious player who is interesting in everything that can be positive for his result.
So if you don’t are motivated, wait for the next day to play. In being able to perform well you need to be focused. Maybe you can play the cards on auto pilot, but how about making efforts to analysing the other players around the table?
One other important thing is rest. If you are tired your performance will get worse. Maybe I’m speaking of things that are obvious to you, but I just want to accentuate important stuff that sometimes will be forgotten or neglected. This is factors that will affect your result. So keep thinking of this and try to take it into account in your way of practising discipline.
Life situation
Maybe some will consider that I now going to discuss as exaggerated, some else I think will agree to it.
Lack of motivation and tiredness are temporary conditions. A person’s life situation including his background is more lasting circumstances. And these things are involving in a more implicit way. The main thing is how this is affecting in very different ways and strength.
An example can be given. Players who losing all theirs chips or a big pot could then feel resemblances of a losing pattern they think are typical even in the real life. The poker game and life itself are given parallels.
Here is another example. A player has so far invested relative much in a pot. Now the opponent is betting after the last card has been shown. The player now looks at his cards and thinks that his cards are probably worse than his opponent. But the thing is: he can’t drop his hand, something pushing him to make the call.
I’m not an expert on psychology therefore I will not make any diagnosis or anything like that, but I will argument that the players in these examples are in situations there their life conflicts with their game. They can’t react rational or play properly in the game because something outside affecting it.
No poker tips that I know of can solve the problems for these players, but I mentioned this to give you an understanding of how broad the psychological perspectives can be set in poker.
Knowledge makes you stronger
Or maybe can even this problem be, at least, diminished. A genuine knowledge about the strategies, probabilities and psychological aspects will give you a more rational attitude towards poker. This is just because you know things. You know that you lose because you played bad, or that you couldn’t avoid slipping out of focus, or that even if you were the favourite in a hand you knew that the probabilities still was there for you to lose.
The more you learn about the game, the more often will you win and the better will you understand and tackle your losses.
